The first bicycle-like creation was called a Swift-walker, invented in 1817. It didn’t even have pedals! People would sit on the seat and use their feet to push the bike forwards. The shape of bicycles continued to evolve throughout the 1800s, gradually becoming the shape we know and love today.
Cycling has continued to grow in popularity until enjoying the widely-known status that it holds today. Now, 42% of households own at least one bicycle.
There are a million reasons why people cycle. Some get on a stationary bike for an hour to burn calories or get toned. Others cycle to get to and from their workplace. Whether cycling for fun, sport, sightseeing, or a specific purpose – cycling has spread into every corner of the world.
